Abstract

Recently several investigators demonstrated that human kerationcytes produce and secrete endothelin (ET)-1 which can be a strong mitogen for melanocytes. UVB exposure extremely stimulates the paracrine linkage of endothelins, indicating them to
be
the
keratinocyte-derived intrinsic mitogens in UVB-melanogenesis.
Thel study is designed to elucidate whether expression of EF-1 is increased by UV irradiation and related to UV induced pigmentation in vitiligo.
Immunohistochemical staining using a monoclonal antibody against mouse ET-l antigen was performed in the biopsied specimens of the vitliginous lesions and pigmented patches taken before and after systemic PUVA therapy from 5 patients with
vitiligo.
Immunohistochemical staining for ET-l were not stain in vitiliginous lesions except one, but entire basal cell layers or entire epidermis were stained in pigmented patches developed after U irradiation.
The above results suggest that ET-l may be play a certain role in pigmentation.
